In another case of censorship over pro-marijuana ads, Condé Nast executives recently ruled that the company would not accept payment for ads that advocated for the passage of Proposition 19, the initiative to legalize and tax marijuana. The organization that was seeking to run the ads was once again “Just Say Now,” which ran into a round of censorship issues from Facebook when the social media giant blocked their ads. However, Condé Nast faced a bit of a backlash from its decision, as the social news site Reddit fought back over what it deemed “corporate censorship” from its parent company and ran the pro-pot ads for free. Reddit didn’t hold back in declaring its disagreement with the ruling publicly and stated the following on its blog:
“The reddit admins were just blindsided with news that, apparently, we’re not allowed to take advertising money from sites that support California’s Prop 19 (like this one, for example). There’s a lot of rabble flying around, and we wanted to make some points: This was a decision made at the highest levels of Conde Nast. reddit itself strongly disagrees with it, and frankly thinks it’s ridiculous that we’re turning away advertising money.”
