As November draws increasingly closer, many are itching to know how Californians will vote on Prop 19, the initiative to legalize marijuana, and as campaigns amp up their efforts, where various interested parties line up will be an interesting development to follow as well. For a round-up of how support and opposition is currently lining up, take the following:
The Oakland Tribune reports that in unsurprisingly, law enforcement, anti-drug groups, and big business are gearing up to oppose it. The Tribune summarizes:
“Beyond that, it's shaping up as a battle of niches, as many bigger, broader-based entities can't seem to get their various constituencies on the same page. For example, among politicians it's being endorsed mostly by those for whom it seems to be "safe" to do so. Yet statewide officials and candidates aren't likely to embrace the measure, as statewide polls show the voters they aim to please offer only middling support for the measure at best. Even the parties are split. The California Democratic Party chose to stay neutral on Prop. 19”

And reportedly there are divisions within the medical pot industry, with many in the industry opposing the measure due to concerns about how it will affect protections put in place for medical pot users. The Bee reports:
“And yet some of its more stubborn opposition comes from a vocal segment of the same community who worry their dispensary operations may be negatively affected. ’I'm against this because I feel patients have been sold a bill of goods that is going to take their freedom away,’ said Lanette Davies, who runs Canna Care. Another opponent, Don Johnson, who operates the Unity Non-Profit Collective in Sacramento, said he worries about contradictions between California's medical marijuana law and Proposition 19.”
